GPO and Searching for Information
Kudos to Cheryl LaGuardia, Research Librarian at Harvard University for bringing attention to changes that are coming to GPO Access. GPO Access is the site many researchers use to find out information on issues that affect the public in regards to federal government. This is a freebie site and libraries usually post the site in order to help the public become more aware of what is going on at the federal level. Since the majority of individuals work or go to school not very many have the luxuries of time or resources to attend or address live congressional hearings, deliberations and policies that come down the information tube. So, GPO Access is our freebie information tube.
According to information posted by LaGuardia on Library Journal online, GPO Access will now become (FDsys) Federal Digital System. Interesting thing about the change is that GPO Access will become the new system at the end of 2009. That is right around the corner and this change needs to be known by the general population. While the change will occur immediately, collections will be added to the new system piece by piece. Now, having stated that the change will occur at the end of this year GPO Access will continue to function until all collections have been migrated to the new system.
Concerns: how long will this migration take, does research take place simultaneously in both systems, and will the public be notified when the migration is complete?
Stay Tuned.

On Display in the Library
Students in Nancy Staples’ Music Appreciation class worked in groups researching, planning, and making a musical instrument. Students could use any materials to construct their instruments—and they did -- cigar box, muffler, soda can, cookie tin, nuts and washers. Students made a class presentation about their instrument and wrote a summary of the group’s work. These amazing creations, with a description of the materials used, are now on display in the Reference area of the library. And they actually make …. music? You decide!
